 Choosing an ISP

Are you happy with your ADSL Internet Service Provider (ISP)? Do you know that you do not have to use Telkom as your ISP? A lot of ordinary people make a conscious and conscientious decision to not use Telkom as their ADSL ISP. By not using Telkom as their ISP, consumers help to reduce Telkom's incredible power in the industry. ISPs, in general, are usually at odds with Telkom. And, as they say, 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend...'

There are other reasons to switch from TelkomInternet as your ISP. Many of the smaller ISPs have been forced (due to Telkom's anti-competitive behaviours) to become creative in their service offerings. For example, do you know that some ISPs offer pre-paid data? Did you know that some ISPs even have packages that allow you to 'roll over' unused data allowance at the end of the month? Do you know that you can buy 'local-only' bandwidth/data allowance? Do you know that some ISPs offer support via Instant Messenger, and some even provide support via the MyADSL forums (which often results in speedy resolutions of problems customers have).

In general, the quality of customer service offered by smaller ISPs is far superior than that offered by TelkomInternet. If you are interested in making the switch to a new ISP for your ADSL, then read through the first TWO posts in THIS thread on MyADSL. It helps a lot, especially if you are a bit of newbie to the whole ADSL thing and are currently looking for an ADSL ISP.

Just a note of caution- remember that there is the odd 'bad-apple' nasty ISP out there, aside from TelkomInternet, that is. To protect yourself and your wallet, always be sure to READ THE FINE PRINT. Be extra alert if you are signing any kind of contract. In the current telecoms environment, you need to be particularly aware of ALL the obligations you agree to under ANY long-term contract. A sign of a good contract is the existence of a fair 'exit' clause (i.e. for if you wanted 'out' of the contract). Just stay aware, and if in doubt, ask for other customers' ruthlessly honest opinions via the MyADSL forums.

Happy ISP shopping!
