 | News: ICASA Councillor nominations |
Parliament has called for nominations for ICASA Councillors.
Individuals as well as organisations may put forward their candidate
nominations to parliament. A potential candidate should satisfy the
following conditions:
"• Committed to fairness, freedom of expression, openness and accountability .
• Representative of a broad cross-section of the population of the
Republic and will possess suitable qualifications, expertise and
experience in the fields of, amongst others, broadcasting policy,
electronic communication and postal policy or operations, public policy
development, electronic engineering, law, marketing, journalism,
entertainment, education, economics, finance or any other related
expertise or qualifications .
• A South African citizen permanently resident in the Republic"
In nominating a potential candidate, the nominator is required to include the following information:
"Full name and address of the
institution and/or individual making the nomination;
The nominee's
signed acceptance of the nomination and his/her Curriculum Vitae,
providing at least the following information:
• Full name, ID number
and gender • Contact address, telephone and telefax numbers, e-mail
address • Previous experience, quoting dates and organisations
concerned • Academic qualifications."

An excellent article written up by Greg the owner Hellkom.co.za. The
article brings up a lot of excellent points and has a very graphic
picture that lets you know right away what the most important issues
are.
"The South African Government owns almost 40% of Telkom, yet only 10%
of South Africans have access to a phone line. Our internet and
telephone charges are amongst the highest on this planet.
Prepaid cellular users pay twice as much as contract subscribers, yet
they are the ones who can least afford it. All the cellular networks
have a minimum of 80% prepaid users. Average revenue per user is a
fraction of contract subscribers - indicative of the fact that people
are aware it's too expensive to use prepaid as they would like to..."
